A former Florida starter, Will Grief transferred from the Gators, switched conferences and joined the Big 12, where he became a star at West Virginia. Combined for 71 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in back-to-back seasons with over 3,400 yards each. His completion percentage and yards per attempt both improved in his senior season, as he shot up West Virginia’s record book. Not a runner, and doesn’t have a laser arm like other big-time QB prospects. Grier didn’t have a great Senior Bowl but tested out well at the combine with the exception of the 40. Did nicely handling blitz and throwing the ball downfield in college, which could help make up for his lack of arm talent.

    What the analysts say

“Grier benefited from the West Virginia system, but that same system definitely benefited from his time there. He is a confident leader who would much rather press for the big throw than play it safe underneath. His lack of plus arm talent and release quickness might not match his gunslinger mentality against an NFL secondary. Grier will have to win from the pocket, which means working the middle of the field with better anticipation and getting rid of the ball much sooner. His disappointing Senior Bowl and combine performances have likely hurt his stock.” – Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

“After watching Grier’s 2017 tape I barely considered him a legit prospect, but his improvements in 2018 were significant. Grier is still a questionable decision-maker who will have his fair share of struggles adjusting to an NFL secondary, but his accuracy, toughness and ability to throw with touch down the field give him a chance as a backup/spot starter in the NFL. He needs significant development from the neck up depending on how pro-style his system will be, but his experience and poise could help him handle early action if the offense can be tailored to some of his strengths early on.” – Jon Ledyard, The Draft Network
