He's an All-American, an All-Conference performer, and a back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher. One would think David Montgomery's draft stock would be higher. But there are some red flags after his career at Iowa State. Montgomery gathered most of his yards in volume, which speaks to his durability, but his career average of 4.7 yards per carry is low for the college game, especially amongst elite running backs. Montgomery has, however, shown ability in the passing game and a knack for shedding tackles. While his combine wasn't strong, Montgomery hopes teams look at the totality of his film from college.

    What the analysts say

"One of the safest runners in this draft with a desirable combination of size, vision, toughness and creativity. He runs with impressive calm and instincts in the midst of interior mayhem, weaving and battering his way through traffic. Smart teams will recognize his ability to create yardage for himself with his eyes, footwork, contact balance and power. Should alleviate concerns about his lack of explosiveness. Montgomery has a pro-ready game and Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) value as a good NFL starter." -- Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

"Montgomery is an old school, workhorse type of running back with an ideal frame built for the NFL. He toes the line of athletically limited, as speed and explosiveness aren’t strong suits. However, he isn’t a plodder and is a relentless runner. With his collegiate production and projection as an effective in between the tackles runner and short yardage back, he should be valued in the middle rounds of the NFL Draft." -- Brad Kelly, The Draft Network
