    BIG PICTURE

In a weak tight end class, small school product Adam Trautman could end up being one of the best of the group if his skills shown at Dayton translate to the NFL. Trautman has NFL size at 6-foot-5. He improved his yardage and touchdown totals each year at Dayton after beginning his career with aspirations to be a quarterback. He ended with 916 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior and 31 career touchdowns. Missed tackles forced, contested catches, good hands. Trautman was dominant at the college level, and his agility drills were among the best of any performers at the combine.

    COMBINE NOTABLES

    18 bench reps (T-7th)

    34.5-inch vertical (T-6th)

    6.78 3-cone drill (1st)

    4.27 20-yard shuttle (T-2nd)

    VIKINGS' COMPATIBILITY RANKING

2.5 out of 5. The Vikings love Day 3 tight ends. Minnesota has four tight ends on the roster presently, but Kyle Rudolph won't be around forever.

    WHAT DRAFT EXPERTS SAY

Lance Zierlein, NFL.com: "Right now, Trautman is a big, pass-catching tight end who needs to prove he can transition from his level of competition and handle bigger, more physical coverage dogging him around the field. He has a solid athletic profile, but his technique as a blocker will need to be upgraded as teams will likely expect him to play in-line due to his size. He's a talented pass-catcher with Day 3 potential, and good upside to work with."

Joe Marino, Draft Network: "A high school quarterback, Adam Trautman never caught a pass prior to college but left Dayton as the program’s all-time leading receiver. Trautman needs a ton of technical work as a blocker and receiver but his blend of size, length, athleticism and competitive toughness gives him a chance to develop into a quality NFL player. There are outstanding flashes of NFL traits but his newness to the position combined with the level of competition he played against is a lot to consider when forecasting him to the next level. The tight end position is already challenging for refined college prospects to come into the NFL and make an immediate impact so projecting Trautman to do that is aggressive. With that said, he’s a worthwhile developmental prospect who could find early work in subpackages and has the ceiling of an impact starter."
