Locks
MLB (0.5 Unit) NY Yankees/Boston Red Sox Over 8.5 (-110): 6:10 PM CT on TBS
The last time I tried picking on Nick Pivetta, it didn’t go so well, but tonight looks like an even better spot against a team that’s been crushing him. Pivetta has faced the Yankees 3 times this year, compiling an 11.48 ERA, a 2.03 WHIP, and a .333 on-base average allowed. To be fair, he hasn’t faced them in a couple of months, and New York has gone through the injury gauntlet since. But the Yankees should be healthy enough to continue tagging Pivetta and his bad relievers for plenty of runs.
And the other side of the equation should net us some scoring here too. Gerrit Cole taking the mound for New York just isn’t as scary as it used to be, especially against teams like Boston. Lineups with lots of good right-handed hitters have frustrated the Yankee ace this season, and the Sox are no exception, tagging Cole for a 5.29 ERA in 3 meetings.
Things have also tended to get weird in this rivalry over the course of the season with some really high-scoring games. Whenever either of these starters takes the mound against the other team, the games are 5-0 to the over. Plus, the games at Fenway have averaged 9.7 runs, and there’s a breeze blowing out tonight. So with strong trends and not-so-strong starters, I see this one getting over a moderate total.
