Locks
NCAA Football (0.5 Unit) Jacksonville St/Middle Tennessee Over 51.5 (-110; Odds via Caesars): 7:00 PM CT on ESPNU
There’s interesting movement, or lack thereof, on the total in this game. Despite a lot of more public models projecting this to be a game in the 40’s for total points, the number has refused to dip below where it is now. That kind of resistance on a lower-tier college game on Wednesday night signals smart money believes 51.5 is an important number, and I don’t agree with the lower-scoring projections considering the pace we should see.
Jacksonville State is running plays at the third-fastest rate in the country, with Middle Tennessee fairly fast as well at 39th in tempo. The Gamecocks found something last week with Logan Smothers in the passing game, engineering a big comeback against a good defense. They should be able to keep that up against a Blue Raiders secondary ranked 104th against the pass.
MTSU meanwhile should bounce back offensively being at home, with their quick short passing game finding holes against a Jacksonville defense that hasn’t really been tested. With enough success from the offenses, a fast pace should see this game generate plenty of scoring.
