  • VIDEO: Gabe Kalscheur Beats Washington With an Off-Balance 3-Pointer

    Guest Sam Ekstrom

The Minnesota Golden Gophers delivered an iconic early-season moment Wednesday night as freshman Gabe Kalscheur uncorked a game-winning 3 with 2.1 seconds left to beat Washington, win the Vancouver Showcase and keep the Gophers a perfect 5-0.

The win bolsters Minnesota's non-conference resume, giving them victories over Utah, Texas A&M and Washington in the season's first five games. Washington, who had been ranked in the top 25 to begin the season, was probably their toughest test of the year. The Gophers had to rally back from nine points down in the second half to win on Kalscheur's shot.

The freshman is off to a roaring start in the Maroon and Gold with at least two 3-pointers in every game, including a game with five makes against Utah and seven on Tuesday against Santa Clara.

He is 18 of 31 (58.1 percent) on the season, which is the best 3-point percentage in the nation for any player with over 30 attempts.

The DeLaSalle product earned himself a starting spot with his mature approach to the game, which we detailed at Zone Coverage last week.

Here's another angle on his game winner, featuring play-by-play announcer Cory Provus, who also calls Minnesota Twins games on radio.

You know, TV announcers get excited, too. Witness our very own @CoryProvus & Shon Morris calling Gabe Kalscheur's game-winner for @GopherMBB. pic.twitter.com/ZBYhm0hn7A
