Minneapolis – In a surprising turn of events, the Minnesota Twins announced Friday morning that they have mutually parted ways with President, Baseball and Business Operations Derek Falvey.
The Twins will split Falvey’s roles back into two: general manager Jeremy Zoll will take the lead with Twins Baseball Operations, and Tom Pohlad will lead their business operations in the interim.
“Over the past several weeks, Derek and I had thoughtful and candid conversations about leadership, structure, and the future of the club,” Pohlad said in a statement shared by the Twins. “We reached a shared understanding that the needs of the organization are evolving and that a leadership transition is the best way to move forward.”
Falvey also offered his thoughts in a shared statement.
“Following a series of thoughtful conversations with Tom that began after the ownership transition and progressed over the past few weeks, we both agreed this was the right time for us to part ways,” Falvey said. “Ownership transitions naturally create moments for reflection and honest dialogue about leadership, vision, and how an organization wants to move forward.
“Over the past several weeks, we had those conversations openly and constructively and ultimately reached a shared understanding that this was the right step both for the organization and for me personally.”
Falvey has been with the Twins since October 2016, and his departure comes 15 months after former general manager Thad Levine left the organization. They brought Levine in alongside Falvey as the team transitioned to a new front office. Falvey has served as Minnesota’s Executive Vice President, Chief Baseball Officer since the Twins hired him in 2016. They promoted him to President, Baseball and Business Operations on March 3, 2025.
The timing of Falvey’s departure is unprecedented for any team. Minnesota’s announcement came only two weeks before pitchers and catchers report to spring training. At the Twins Media Luncheon on Jan. 23, Zoll said the Twins will still make Major League and Minor League signings in the coming weeks.
“I think we'll continue to be quite active in that area over the next couple weeks,” Zoll said last week. “And, you know, got to keep working through it and get to actual agreements.”
The Twins have begun a new search for Falvey’s replacement as President of Business Operations. In the meantime, Falvey says the club is in good hands.
“I’m thankful to the Pohlad family for the opportunity and the trust they placed in me, and I have tremendous confidence in the talented people across the organization,” he said in a statement. “Jeremy Zoll is an outstanding baseball leader, Derek Shelton is an excellent manager, and I believe the Club is well positioned for success in the years ahead.”
