  • Texas' Michael Taaffe Is A Perfect Day 3 Vikings Steal

    Guest Carter Cox

The Minnesota Vikings need to address safety in this year's draft. With Harrison Smith’s uncertain future, there’s no better time than now to address this issue. Texas’ Michael Taaffe would be an excellent fit for the Vikings, and they wouldn’t need to spend premium draft capital.

Michael Taaffe is projected to be drafted on Day 3 of the draft, likely landing in the fourth or fifth round. Still, he was an All-American in 2025, and his level of production doesn’t match his draft projection.

Taaffe also has a great story. He grew up a huge Texas fan and chose to walk on there. In five years of college football, he played his way into becoming one of the best players in the nation.

Taafe even passed up scholarship opportunities at different schools because of how much Texas meant to him. Loyalty is important to Taaffe, which is hard to find in modern-day college football. It’s also something that should endear him to the Vikings’ coaching staff.

Sure, Taaffe has a great story and accolades, but what makes him stand out on tape?

Like Harrison Smith, Taaffe is excellent at closing in on ball carriers. He’s constantly in the right place and takes the right angles.

Not only does he close in quickly, but he can also tackle extremely effectively, generating big hits.

Taaffe also came up clutch in huge moments. He showed his tackling ability against Clemson in the College Football Playoff, sealing the game for Texas.

Taaffe also excels in coverage. He allowed .29 yards per coverage snap in 2025.

He’s always in the best position to make a play on the ball, and that also includes interceptions.

In the clip above, Taaffe makes an extremely athletic play to get an interception against Texas A&M. This athleticism is something that would make him stand out to the Vikings staff.

Taaffe has also played many positions on the defense, and his head coach used him as a Swiss Army knife.

Versatility is a huge aspect of his game, and one that people may have overlooked. If the Vikings were to draft Taaffe, they could use him all over the field, something that would endear him to Brian Flores.

Although it wasn't in a live game, Taaffe was trusted enough to take reps at wide receiver during Texas’ pro day. Clearly, his team thinks enough of him to put them in the best position to showcase his talent to the NFL scouts. His willingness to do this speaks to his character, and his teammates' trust means even more.

Taaffe not only has a great story but also the leadership to go along with it. He has been regarded as a leader at Texas ever since he was a walk-on.

Having this much natural leadership ability is rare, and it’s clear that no stage is too big for Taaffe.

Scouts have concerns about his size, coming in at 6’0”, 189 lbs. Though this is valid, he played elite football at the highest level in college, which mitigates that to some degree.

Michael Taaffe has been underrated his whole career. It’s almost ironic that he is projected to be drafted in the later rounds. However, he has proven that he is always willing to go against the odds. If the Vikings can add Taaffe to their roster, they would be adding the exact type of player — and person — NFL teams strive for.
