Guess who's back ... again.
According to Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, special teams ace Marcus Sherels will return to the Minnesota Vikings for his ninth season on a one-year contract. Only Brian Robison has been on the team longer, while Everson Griffen matches Sherels for length of tenure.
As an undrafted free agent from the University of Minnesota, Sherels made the team in 2010, then assumed punt return duties in 2011. It's a role he hasn't relinquished since, despite numerous training camp challengers.
He'll turn 31 years old this September.
Sherels had his fourth-best yards-per-return average last season (9.5) despite not having a return touchdown. He has five punt return scores in his career, including two in 2016.
Last season Sherels also returned 11 kickoffs as the Vikings tried to find a replacement for the departed Cordarrelle Patterson. He may be in the running for that role once again in 2018.
In addition, Sherels found a niche as one of the team's best gunners, recording six special teams tackles a year ago.
