The Minnesota Vikings have released kicker Kai Forbath, meaning that Daniel Carlson, the Vikings fifth round pick this year, won the competition to be Minnesota's kicker this season.
Forbath was given a one-year, $760,000 contract to replace Blair Walsh in November of 2016. He has made 50 of 67 field goals since taking over for Walsh, but missed eight extra points with the Vikings and did not have the desired leg strength for kickoffs and long field goal attempts.
Forbath missed a 41-yard field goal attempt on Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Carlson was six-for-six (four field goals, two extra points) against the Denver Broncos in the preseason opener.
Carlson, 23, is seven years younger than Forbath. He played college football at Auburn.
