After playing large roles throughout her career in Minnesota and especially during the 2017 championship season, veteran point guard Renee Montgomery will not return to the Minnesota Lynx in 2018.

With free agents officially being able to sign on Thursday, multiple reports suggest Montgomery will head to the Atlanta Dream next season. Although she’s not from Atlanta, Montgomery does currently own a home in Atlanta.

The news of the Montgomery signing was first reported by on Twitter late Wednesday afternoon.

A few hours later, Montgomery confirmed the reports, taking to Instagram to thank Lynx players, coaches and fans for her time in Minnesota.

Montgomery leaves the Lynx after spending two-plus seasons in Minnesota, having appeared in three WNBA Finals and coming away with two rings.

Montgomery is coming off of a strong 2017 performance, serving primarily as a backup to point guard Lindsay Whalen. In 34 games, she averaged eight points, 3.4 assists, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game.

Last season, Montgomery even found herself stepping into the starting role midway through the year, filling in for an injured Whalen, and even played a large role in the Lynx championship run.

Having served as the backup guard – and a valuable one at that – with a desire to get herself a starting point guard role, Montgomery starting looking for a new home during free agency.

And in return, Atlanta will become that landing spot in 2018, officially ending her time in Minnesota.
