  • Class A Notebook: Uma Corniea's Smile, Award Winners & Consolation Results

    Guest Giles Ferrell

A big storyline in Saturday afternoon's Class A title game was Breck's goaltender Uma Corniea. While her play on the ice was stellar for a seventh grader, it was not her play that was being talked about.

    It was her smiling.

At every puck stoppage when the camera panned to Corniea in goal, she had a visible grin on her face. When asked about it postgame she said with a smile, "I always play better when I'm smiling. Life is better when I'm smiling. I just like smiling. It helps me be confident in the net and don't let things irritate me."

"She is confident on every single shot," said head coach Rhonda Engelhardt. "She was ready. She was a competitor. She will compete on every single pick. Just her demeanor and confidence, and her smile is what would get us there. She is always smiling."
