The Green Bay Packers had their most impressive performance this season, winning 34-13 over the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field to improve to 4-2. Many aspects of the team meaningfully contributed to their victory, but Romeo Doubs was Green Bay’s biggest X-factor on Sunday.
Entering the week, Doubs’ situation with the team was not good.
Following Green Bay’s 31-29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, he challenged the team and criticized his role in the offense. He only had four receptions for 39 yards against the Vikings, whereas other receivers like Jayden Reed had seven catches for 139 yards, and Dontayvion Wicks had five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns. So he was frustrated that the Packers weren’t using him more.
In the week following the loss to Minnesota, Doubs skipped Thursday and Friday practices. The team suspended him for the following game against the Los Angeles Rams for “conduct detrimental to the team.”
He denied that his absences from practice were due to his role on the team, but there have been reports that he was upset that he wasn’t more involved in the offense.
Doubs and the team were ready to move on despite what happened.
Before the Cardinals game, Matt LaFleur said that Romeo Doubs was having a great week of practice. Given Doubs’ quiet season so far, something was about to give.
And it gave on Sunday.
With a 7-0 lead on Green Bay’s third drive, Jordan Love threw an 18-yard pass over the middle to Doubs to start the possession. To finish that drive, Love threw a quick out route to Doubs. He made the catch, broke a tackle, and dove into the end zone for his first score of the year, putting the Packers up 14-0 at the start of the second quarter.
That must have been a huge moment for Doubs. He had returned after all that stress and adversity to make a big play in the game early and regain momentum.
It did not stop there, either.
On Green Bay’s first drive of the second half, Love threw a prayer of a pass off his back foot towards Romeo Doubs. Doubs adjusted, came back, and made a wonderful, athletic catch. He got both feet in bounds and secured his second touchdown. The Packers were up, 31-13, halfway through the third quarter.
Doubs didn’t have another reception for the rest of the game, finishing with three catches for 49 yards and two scores. He was not Green Bay’s most-targeted receiver, nor did he have the most receptions. Still, he maximized his opportunities.
The Doubs saga highlights how special Green Bay’s offense can be when it’s healthy and intact. Even without Doubs in the lineup, other guys like Reed and Wicks can make plays, as we all saw last week against the Rams. Still, Doubs adds another dimension to the passing game that allows him and his teammates to thrive.
Having Doubs as a deep threat on the outside of the numbers took a lot of the defense's attention, opening up the middle of the field for other guys to make plays, as we saw with Christian Watson before halftime.
Doubs’ performance against Arizona unleashed something in him. Given how quiet his season had been until this game, it was time for him to have a breakout game.
Now that he has put his issues behind him and has figured out his role more on the team, it’s only a matter of time before he gets even more involved in the game plan. It could start as soon as next week against the Houston Texans. He has built more trust with Jordan Love, and now Love knows he can throw Doubs the ball in panic situations, as he did on Sunday.
Good times are ahead for Romeo Doubs and this offense. As long as he continues to put in the work in practice every week, the results will show on the field.
