  • Bill Parcells’s Iconic Quote Perfectly Describes the Packers

    Guest Felipe Reis

The 2024 Green Bay Packers are the definition of “You are what your record says you are.”

    The context behind Bill Parcells’s

was a response to a question about a mediocre team’s performance. However, the 2024 Packers are not a mediocre football team. With an 11-5 record, a clinched playoff berth, and the offense and defense ranking in the top six in EPA per play, Green Bay has the tools to compete with anyone in the NFL.

However, the Packers are winless against the NFC's top contenders.

In Week 1, the Packers fell 34-29 to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. On the first two drives, Green Bay’s defense forced turnovers that put Matt LaFleur’s offense in the red zone. However, they managed only six points from those opportunities.

The Packers converted only one of five trips inside the 25-yard line into a touchdown. They settled for field goals on four occasions. Green Bay left 19 points unclaimed in a game they only lost by five.

Green Bay’s second loss came in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau. The Packers fell into a 28-7 hole by halftime. Despite outscoring Minnesota 22-3 in the second half, the deficit was too much to overcome.

The Vikings completed a season sweep of the Packers with a Week 17 win in Minneapolis. Green Bay fell behind by three scores again, trailing 20-3 and later 27-10. They rallied to make it a two-point game with a chance to get the ball back, but a blown coverage on Cam Akers in the flat on third-and-two sealed the loss.

Minnesota wasn’t the only divisional opponent to sweep Green Bay. The Detroit Lions won 24-14 at Lambeau, with the Packers trailing 17-3 at halftime. Green Bay’s performance in Detroit was their most complete effort in a divisional loss this season. Still, it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

The Packers have lost five games by an average of just 4.4 points to teams with a combined record of 40-7.

Green Bay defeated a 7-9 Arizona Cardinals team and a San Francisco 49ers squad decimated by injuries at Lambeau. They also beat an 8-5 Seattle Seahawks team on the road and defeated the division-champion Los Angeles Rams, who were without Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua and 1-3 at the time.

The Packers beat the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans in back-to-back weeks, with Malik Willis under center and Matt LaFleur out-scheming Shane Steichen and Brian Callahan. They also defeated a bad Jacksonville Jaguars team on the road and a 5-1 Houston Texans squad at the time, which is now 9-6 and looking mediocre.

The Packers defeated the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. While I’d place Miami a tier above New Orleans, neither team is a contender. New Orleans started a rookie quarterback and was missing key players like Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara, Rashid Shaheed, and Taysom Hill.

Green Bay has yet to lose a game in the United States to a non-NFC North opponent. They are 1-4 against NFC North teams and 10-1 against everyone else, with their only loss coming in Brazil. The Packers could easily be 0-5 in the division if it weren’t for Karl Brooks’ middle finger blocking a last-second field goal.

Vegas is currently on a 12-0 streak predicting Packers results, which sums up Green Bay’s season. They are a good team that beats bad teams, but they can’t seem to secure a win against a contender.

I’m not knocking Green Bay’s wins. Winning in the NFL is challenging, and the Packers should take pride in being a model of consistent success. We know Green Bay is a good team that will beat bad teams because of its talent and coaching, but it is not yet a great team that can consistently beat contenders.

However, it's a new season once the clock hits midnight on January 6. Whether the Packers end up as the sixth or seventh seed, they’ll likely have to beat Philadelphia, Detroit, or Minnesota on the road. The Packers taking down all three teams that beat them this year on their way to a Super Bowl would be a crazy storyline. If any team can pull this off, it’s the most successful franchise in NFL history.
